Happy Earth Day! We are so grateful to care for this land and spend time alongside the many creatures that live here too. Today we saw two great blue herons, a young bald eagle, and lots of voles when we removed a silage tarp for a new section of the garden. We’ve been working to establish new perennial beds of strawberries, asparagus, and rhubarb while also planting spinach, lettuce, peas, and more! Overwintered spinach harvest today! We left this spinach in the kitchen garden under cover all winter and all that freezing and thawing made it so sweet! We also tried out our new microscope today and learned about trichomes. According to the University of New Hampshire extension office, trichomes are “hair-like outgrowths from the epidermis of the leaf, and many plants (including spinach) produce them. Trichomes come in all sorts of shapes and sizes, and have different purposes. In the case of spinach, if you look closely with a microscope, you can see that there is a little hair that comes from the leaf surface, and a big glob at the end.“ So cool! Last week we had the honor of attending the soft launch of @boyfriendcoop in Brooklyn. Our friend and former Open Grange resident (iykyk) Mica (pictured in the tree and with the mushrooms) co-founded this cooperatively run queer cafe, bar, and event space. Boyfriend Co-op celebrates racial, sexual, and gender diversity in a comfortable and colorful setting. Also both the cocktails and mocktails are delicious! The vibes are so welcoming and offer such an important space for community. Congrats to the @boyfriendcoop team! We’ve been working on taking down the former cattle corral, the last time the farm had cows was 20 years ago! We’ll also be hosting more events in this field and wanted to expand the view. Happy spring! We are excited to announce our third annual plant sale this Memorial Day Weekend, May 24-26, from 10AM-5PM. This year the pop-up cafe will also be open selling seasonal treats and beverages. All of our plants are grown in organic New England Potting Mix @necompost, biodegradable CowPots @cowpotsgirl, and without the use of fossil fuels or pesticides.
